Director Ielmini discussed firestopping, the FMIA and more on AWF podcast

April 23, 2025

Pete Ielmini, Executive Director of the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust (LMCT), joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss critical topics impacting the mechanical insulation industry.

The conversation centered around the importance of firestopping, the efforts to reintroduce the Federal Mechanical Insulation Act and the role of unions in advancing these initiatives.

Firestopping is a crucial component of building safety, requiring technical precision to effectively seal penetrations in fire-rated walls to prevent a fire from spreading.

Ielmini explained that while the installation process may seem straightforward, the expertise needed to maintain wall integrity is vital.

“Firestopping and smoke seal is a very specialized craft that is performed and it physically is not that hard to be able to install it, but it is extremely technical and you have to be able to follow the specifications and how to install the products properly,” Ielmini said.

This specialized craft prevents the spread of fire and smoke, safeguarding lives and property.

Iemini emphasized the need for contractors to embrace this work, as it not only saves lives but is profitable, driving both firestopping and mechanical insulation businesses forward.

Federal Mechanical Insulation Act

The Federal Mechanical Insulation Act represents a significant legislative effort to improve energy efficiency and reduce taxpayer expenses.

If passed, the FMIA will require all federal building energy audits to include mechanical insulation.

Ielmini discussed the upcoming reintroduction of the bill, emphasizing the strategic bipartisan support it has collected.

“We’re going with what they call the Noah’s Ark approach, where we’re not going to load up one side heavily more than the other,” Ielmini said. “When we sign on a Democrat, we’re going to sign on a Republican.”

The bill’s requirement for regular evaluations of mechanical insulation in federal buildings promises substantial growth for the insulation industry as well as saving taxpayer money.

Ielmini highlighted the efforts of Local Union leaders who actively engage with Congress to garner support, emphasizing the potential economic and environmental benefits of the legislation.
