Pete Ielmini, Executive Director of the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust, discussed the Federal Mechanical Insulation Act, member assistance programs and the retirement of trailblazer Gina Walsh on the America’s Work Force Union Podcast.
The Federal Mechanical Insulation Act is progressing through Congress with bipartisan support. Ielmini explained how the bill aims to include mechanical insulation in energy audits of federal buildings, addressing an oversight in the 2007 National Energy and Security Act.
With 16 co-sponsors evenly split between Democrats and Republicans, the focus is now on gaining support from members of the Energy and Commerce Committee.
Ielmini expressed optimism about the bill’s progress this fall, emphasizing its potential to improve energy efficiency in over 350,000 federal buildings nationwide.
“There’s been no pushback on this, so there should be no problem submitting this bill into law,” Ielmini said.
Insulators Member Assistance Program
The conversation then shifted to member assistance programs. Ielmini and AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc highlighted their importance, particularly in addressing mental health issues in the construction industry.
He stressed the need for confidential support and education to ensure workers have a clear mind on jobsites, comparing it to the now-accepted practice of drug testing.
The Insulators Member Assistance Program (IMAP) aims to break down barriers and provide support for issues ranging from suicide prevention to substance abuse and domestic problems.
Ielmini emphasized the marathon-like effort required to implement these programs effectively and the support from signatory contractors in this endeavor.
“Supporting mental health and mental wellness is going to make workers more efficient and more safe,” Ielmini said.
Gina Walsh retires
Reflecting on former LMCT Deputy Director Gina Walsh’s recent retirement, Ielmini praised her as a force to be reckoned with in union labor advocacy.
He highlighted her political achievements in Missouri and her instrumental role in advancing legislation and educating others about the challenges women face in construction.
Walsh’s efforts to address issues such as construction workers and maternity leave were noted as pioneering steps towards improving working conditions in the industry.
