Director Ielmini discusses FMIA and other industry news on AWF Union Podcast

October 22, 2025

Pete Ielmini, Executive Director of the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust, recently appeared on America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss crucial industry developments.

Ielmini shared updates on the Federal Mechanical Insulation Act, highlighted the importance of trade shows and emphasized the critical role of proper insulation and firestopping installation.

The Federal Mechanical Insulation Act continues to gain momentum in Congress, boasting 33 bipartisan co-sponsors. Despite delays caused by the government shutdown, Ielmini remains optimistic about the bill’s future.

Lobbying efforts are ongoing, with work progressing on a companion Senate bill sponsored by Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and potential Republican co-sponsorship from Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-MS).

“I’m hoping that once we get a number done in the House and it gets approved, it’ll quickly go over to the Senate and maybe by the end of the year, we’ll finally have this thing passed in Congress,” Ielmini said.

Importance of Trade Shows

Ielmini also stressed the enduring value of trade shows in educating stakeholders about mechanical insulation. Unlike other trades, mechanical insulators must actively promote awareness of their craft.

At recent events like the Firestop Contractors Insulation Association conference, the LMCT team engaged with industry professionals, highlighting the availability of skilled union labor for insulation and firestopping installation.

Proper mechanical insulation and firestopping installation are crucial for energy efficiency and safety.

Ielmini emphasized that incorrectly installed insulation significantly reduces its effectiveness, while improperly installed firestopping systems can have life-threatening consequences.

He underscored the importance of union training programs in ensuring high-quality installations that save energy, extend equipment lifecycles and protect lives.
