Jim Petrides discusses Insulator industry news on AWF podcast

May 28, 2025

Jim Petrides, Senior Mechanical Insulation Specialist for the Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust (LMCT), joined the America’s Work Force Union Podcast to discuss a recent study that demonstrates the importance of mechanical insulation.

Petrides shared insights from the study on a Houston sports complex, highlighted work opportunities for signatory contractors and emphasized the need for education in the industry.

The study was conducted by the LMCT. It revealed significant issues with mold and poor energy efficiency.

Petrides explained that the 48-page report outlined ways to improve the facility’s mechanical insulation systems, enhance entertainment value and address mold problems.

The study’s findings will help stakeholders make informed decisions about renovating the existing structure or building a new facility, potentially opening up work opportunities for skilled union insulators.

“After multiple engineers reviewed the study, it was then presented to the sports authority,” Petrides said. “There’s a group of people in that organization that are reviewing everything that was done through the study to find out what they could do to improve these facilities.”

Importance of education in the industry

Petrides stressed the importance of educating stakeholders about the benefits of proper mechanical insulation to AWF host Ed “Flash” Ferenc.

He noted that while some energy service companies and engineers understand its value, many clients and building owners remain unaware of the significant return on investment.

Mechanical insulation can reduce energy costs, control condensation and mold, minimize corrosion on piping and improve indoor air quality.

Petrides emphasized that investing in quality insulation installation by trained professionals leads to lower life cycle costs for facilities.

The LMCT is actively working to promote their trade and expand opportunities for members and signatory contractors.

Petrides highlighted the union’s efforts to educate political representatives, building owners and facility managers about the long-term benefits of proper insulation.

He noted that the industry is growing rapidly and offers excellent career opportunities for young people interested in a field that contributes to energy efficiency and sustainability.

“By having a very skilled work force, a group of individuals that are experts in their field that go to school to understand this through apprenticeship programs, that understand how to install things properly and also understand what the specifications call for, there’s huge work opportunities for the membership themselves and for the stakeholders,” Petrides said.
