The Mechanical Insulators Labor Management Cooperative Trust made its presence felt at the Firestop Contractors International Association (FCIA) annual Firestop Industry Conference and Trade Show (FIC25).
The event took place in Orlando, Fla. on Oct. 13 and 14, when manufacturers, contractors and industry experts came together to explore new technologies, share best practices and advance the firestop industry.
This year’s event proved worthwhile, as organized labor stepped into a more visible role, including the LMCT participating in the conference for the first time.
Although union contractors and members of the International Association of Heat and Frost Insulators and Allied Workers perform a significant portion of firestop work across North America, labor’s presence at this major industry conference has historically been limited. However, that changed at FIC25.
The LMCT established a strong presence to highlight the value of a highly skilled, rigorously trained workforce and to connect manufacturers and building owners with union firestop contractors capable of delivering high-quality, code-compliant installations.
Leading this effort was LMCT Senior Mechanical Insulation Specialist Jim Petrides, CEM, CEA, CTII, CIEA, who spearheaded an informative and engaging booth display that generated steady interest throughout the event. Both manufacturers and contractors expressed enthusiasm about seeing a labor-management organization actively represented on the trade show floor.
The LMCT’s presence helped bridge a long-standing gap between product innovation and the trained workforce needed to install those systems correctly and consistently.
Education was a central focus of FIC25 and many attendees participated in classes designed by firestop contractors for those individuals who are preparing for FM or UL Firestop exams, as well as training to become Firestop Inspectors and those pursuing International Accreditation Services credentials.
Sessions covered a wide range of technical topics such as:
- High-Rise Firestopping
- Firestop Solutions for Unprotected Steel Members
- Installation Methods for Plastic Piping
- Firestop Work in Healthcare Facilities
- Codes and Firestop System Labeling
- Emerging Software Documentation Tools
The conference also addressed broader market issues, such as the expected economic impact of tariffs on construction in the coming years.
For the LMCT, being at FCIA was not just symbolic; it was strategic. Firestop is a critical life safety function, and the performance of any tested and listed system ultimately depends on the quality of the installation.
By engaging directly with manufacturers, code officials and contractors, the LMCT can advocate for the use of trained Insulator Firestop professionals, ensure labor’s perspective is included in technical and policy discussions and help align workforce training with evolving system designs and code requirements.
“The participation of the Insulators LMCT at FCIA’s annual conference provided the LMCT an opportunity to promote the Insulators trained workforce as a source of highly trained installers available throughout the U.S. and Canada,” said Petrides. “Together, our partnership with our specialty contractors provides exceptional firestop life safety solutions throughout the built environment, at a great value for the customer.”
